In previous versions of Dynamics NAV, working with infinite components have always been a little cumbersome.
What are infinite components? You might ask.
Infinite components are items that must be added to the production, but we do not purchase the items in a normal manner. Infinite items in the production could be:
- Electricity
- Water
- Natural gas
Meaning items that we do pay for, but they come into the production automatically.
Previously we have always created the item as a normal item, only with a small change:
If the Inventory Value Zero field is added to the item card, the item will not be included in the inventory valuation and it is also excluded from the stock-take.
But Let’s try adding the item to the Production BOM and use it in a production order:
When the consumption of the component is flushed, we get the same error message as always:
So, in order to get around that, you would normally make a positive adjustment to item 92004 with 1.000.000 pcs with the estimated water price.
Dynamics 365 Business Central
In Dynamics 365 Business Central, a new feature has been snuck in: The Item Type field.
Ok ok, I know the Item Type field came back in Dynamics NAV 2013 R2 as a part of the “Mini App” and it was included on the item card in Dynamics NAV 2017.
At that time, it was possible to split items into Inventory and Service items. However, Service Items were not supported by the manufacturing module.
Then the last time I conducted a Dynamics 365 BC application course, I discovered this little feature:
That made me say: Hmmmmm.
Let us see what is does:
Therefore, I create a new item, make it Non-Inventory and give it a cost price.
Add it to a Production BOM and use it in a production order:
Purchase the 92002 and 92003 items, but NOT the 90004 item.
And then finalize the production order.
No Error
Looking at the Item Ledger Entries for the production order:
Problem solved.
